  • The energy efficiency per linear meter of cargo of the new ship increases almost 60% compared to the previous one

Baleària 's Cap de Barbaria electric ferry , which has been operating since last May between Ibiza and Formentera, has reduced CO2 emissions by 33% compared to Posidonia , the passenger and freight ferry it replaced. This data will mean that around 1,300 tons of CO2 will be reduced annually compared to the ship that operated before. It should also be noted that the Cap de Barbaria ferry can transport almost 100 linear meters more cargo than the Posidonia , increasing energy efficiency per linear meter of cargo by almost 60% more compared to the previous ship.

Thanks to its electric propulsion, during all phases of approach, maneuvering, mooring and stay in the ports of Ibiza and Formentera, the Cap de Barbaria does not emit polluting gases into the atmosphere. In addition, it completely eliminates vibrations and noise pollution in port and considerably during navigation.

The ship has been designed to emphasize the travel experience among passengers, who in these first months have rated it 8.8, making it the highest rated Baleària ship on the Eivissa-Formentera route, and the second most appreciated in the shipping company's fleet. According to passenger satisfaction surveys, the electric ferry is rated above the fleet average in all aspects, highlighting the treatment of the staff and cleanliness.

With capacity for 390 passengers, the upper deck has a chill out area with designer sofas and hammocks, with a large bar in the center. During the summer, music sessions with DJs and cocktail service have been held in this space. The Cap de Barbaria has an elevator between the passage and garage areas, for the comfort of passengers and has an indoor cafeteria and a children's area to liven up the journey for the little ones.

"With this innovative ferry we promote an eco-efficient and sustainable trip, we offer tourists an attractive journey in which they can enjoy the natural environment and we also guarantee a reliable and quality service for residents and for the supply of goods to the island," says Joan Serra, Baleària delegate in the Balearic Islands.

The Cap de Barbaria ferry is 82 meters long and 15.5 meters wide, and sails up to 14 knots. It is a fundamental ship for the supply of essential products to Formentera, since it can transport up to 240 linear meters of cargo (approximately 14 trucks). The double-ended design (operating by bow and stern) and a 360-degree azimuthal electric propulsion allow great agility in loading and unloading operations and maneuvers. Furthermore, the design of the ferry has taken into account that it can ensure its operation in any weather conditions to guarantee the supply of essential products to Formentera.

The financing of the ship has included the participation of the Next Generation Funds of the European Union, within the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (MRR).
